Thanksgiving is just around the corner! These differentiated turkey emergent readers are a perfect addition to the other activities, crafts, and ideas you have planned for your kids this November. Plus, sneak some writing practice in at the end of each book!
Most people only think about turkeys as being a delicious part of their Thanksgiving meal. We can describe what they look like and how scrumptious they taste, but really don't know much else about them. Well, not anymore! By the end of this post, not only will you know more than you would ever want to know about the life of a turkey, but you'll also have seen an awesome differentiated emergent reader that you can use to teach your students more about them as well.

Did you know that a turkey hen lays 9-13 eggs in her clutch in a shallow hole in the ground that's only about 1/2" deep? These I Am a Turkey emergent readers not only tell all kinds of facts about the life cycle of a turkey, but are differentiated as well. Meet your students right where they're at with their reading abilities.
Turkeys do not see well at night, which is why they fly to trees for sleeping. A mother hen, however, will stay on the ground for 28 days, sitting on her clutch to keep them warm and risking her own life to protect them from nighttime predators. It isn't until a poult (baby turkey) is 4 weeks old that it will be able to fly to safety above ground at night with its mother.
Each level of the reader takes students through the basic development of a turkey from inside of an egg, to hatching, to young poult life, to adult life.
At 6 weeks old, a poult will molt it's feathers for the first time. It will molt multiple times. Each time, larger feathers will grow until the poult is an adult.

My favorite part of this informational emergent reader set is that the last page that sneaks in some writing practice! It asks students to write down some of the favorite facts they learned about turkeys.

The last page is one of my favorites. It's included in all of the readers of this series. Students write down a list of the favorite things they learned while reading the book! It's a great way to incorporate writing practice. This picture is from a set of rabbit readers, and I just happened to have it handy to show you. This is how the bat books end as well.

Let me show you two ways you can get this bats reader set.

You can get this differentiated reader by itself here:

(Not familiar with the NGSS standards? Then take some time to read "Getting to Know the Next Generation Science Standards: Kindergarten" first.)

Today, I'm going to focus on the "From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes" standard....which I just simply call my "Living Things" unit. I'll show you all the different parts to my Living Things Interactive Notebook.
You've found them! The best interactive activities to go along with your Living Things science unit. This interactive notebook goes with the Kindergarten NGSS but can also be used with Preschool or First Grade students as well.
This standard can really cover a lot. I mean, you could go into a whole unit on plants, and then another on different life cycles. You could cover different kinds of habitats...there's just so much that you could dive into. So you'll have to pick and choose what works best for you. As far as the interactive notebook goes, it might be something that you just pick pages from as you cover the units you're teaching.

Each science interactive notebook set, including this one, comes with a set of corresponding classroom posters to hang around your room. The vocabulary I chose for the Living Things unit are the seven characteristics of living things:

Each idea covered also comes with its own interactive notebook cover.
The cover pages for each core idea will help your students keep their notebook well organized.

Here is the vocabulary reinforcer:
The Pocket full of Vocab matches the poster set (shown above). Have students pull the cards out of the pocket and review the meanings of the terms. They can quiz themselves, quiz a neighbor, and even write short definitions on the back to help them remember.

After you've talked about the seven characteristics of living things, you can have students look at the pictures below and determine which are living and which are non-living.
Most of your kids are going to know the obvious animal pictures, but many might not realize that plants are alive!

Next, you're going to reinforce your lessons on what living things need in order to survive:

Students will flip open each flap and jot down what that specific picture needs to survive. This is a great opportunity to again bring up the similarities and differences in the needs of living things. The pumpkin needs dirt...but the jellyfish doesn't. The pig does, though!

What about the habitats of living things? How do different living things get their nutrients to grow?
Use a pencil and paperclip to spin and tell about where the different animals live. Cut, paste, and glue the correct form of nutrients on the "Where is My Food?" activity page, and practice your illustrating skills under the flaps on the "Where do I Live?" page!

As I mentioned in a different interactive notebook post, I've noticed that kids LOVE to prove how smart they are. So I created this page that not only reinforces your class discussions throughout the various Living Things units you cover, but also give the kids a chance to feel smart, review their friends, and practice what they've learned.
Students simply pull out one of the many questions and either answer the questions or do what it says.

You've found them! The best interactive activities to go along with your Living Things science unit. This interactive notebook goes with the Kindergarten NGSS but can also be used with Preschool or First Grade students as well.

There are so many fun directions you can go with this standard. Use the interactive notebook to reinforce everything you talk about in the classroom. It will serve as a great "memory book"...a reminder, as they flip through each page, of what activities they did and what conversations you guys had on the topic.

It's January...which means it's Polar Habitat time!
Today I'm going to show you what's included in my winter top-seller Polar Habitat Pack. You'll find everything you need...and more...to supplement your Polar Animals theme. This non-fiction pack includes more than 200 pages of activities. It was made with PreK-2nd in mind. Most of the activities can be as easy or as hard as you want them to be.

Set of 3 Differentiated Emergent Readers
(With Corresponding Class Books)
Each book is 15 pages long. There are 3 different levels to choose from.
Easy - "The penguin lives in the polar habitat."
Medium -"The penguin spends most of its time in the water hunting for food."
Hard - "The penguin spends most of its time in the water hunting for food. It is not able to fly, even though it has wings."
There are also colorful, matching class books for each level. You can laminate and bind them or even just hang them around the classroom to use as 'facts posters'.

Vocabulary Posters & Pocket Chart Pieces
Here is a list of the Polar animals/objects that are included in these posters and pocket chart pieces:
...ice floe, (blue) whale, seal, penguin, walrus, puffin, snow goose, moose, Arctic fox, Arctic hare, snowy owl, polar bear, igloo, Eskimo & Inuit (You can choose which term is used in your location. I recognize that in some areas, "Eskimo" is considered derogatory and yet in others it is the acceptable term, so I've included both.)

Write the Room {Polar Hunt} Activity
This Write-the-Room comes with colorful animal/object pieces that you can hide around the room! Send your kids hunting for Polar themed animals/objects and then have them write the ones they find.

Polar Flip Book
Color, cut, & glue various Polar themed animals/objects to create a Flip Book. A great activity to practice fluency!

Polar Organizers & Fact Sheets
These organizers and fact sheets are perfect for individual research projects. All of the animals/objects listed above are included. Once they are completed, you can laminated and bind them to make a class book!

Labeling (Writing or Cut/Paste) Sheets
You can choose if you want your littles to cute and paste the words into the blanks...or have them write the words. There's plenty of room to do either way.

Polar Head Bands
Simply color, cut out, and glue onto a sentence strip to make the perfect Polar Animal Head Band. A perfect 'costume' pieces for students to wear after completing their individual animal report. You can have them wear it while they stand in front of the class and tell facts about the animal they researched!

You may have seen that I blogged the other day about this Polar Color-by-Number FREEBIE. It's part of my Polar Habitat Pack too!

Well, I hope these Polar themed activities make implementing your theme a breeze! Thanks for stopping by!
